This week in class we examine the product lifecycle by situation companies and their products at different points along its X-axis.  The product lifecycle diagram has evolved to include product extensions.  What is an example of a product extension you have seen marketed?  Do you believe it was successful?  Why or why not?

  1. An example of a successful product extension would be Apple, because its product improves quickly and helpful. The products of Apple attracts people from different places in the world that desires new technology, Apple use this point to become successful and invent products. An example of a product extension from apple would be the wireless earbuds.

  4. A common product extension is soda brands. Drink companies are always trying to find new ways to one up their competition, and the best and cheapest way to do it is tweak the product slightly to bring in more consumers ready to try the “new” drink.

  6. The iPhone is an example of a successful product. This is because apple every year comes out with something new and different, may not always be in favour of us, but they do keep loyalty with their customers. Apple products come out in different shapes, sizes, and colours.

  7. an example of a product extension is coke. They are releasing different flavors .Changing the wrap of the bottle into different designs for various holidays and events. Like they have the iconic snowy polar bear design and the most recent Rio Olympic design coke bottle. I believe this will keep people buying coca cola products.

  8. A product extension we see almost every year is the evolution of phones. Almost every year major brands such as apple and Samsung release a new phone. This product extension adds new features to the phone as well as a higher processing power to be able to run more smoothly. This is a successful example of product extension because people will go out and buy a new phone almost every year making the company very profitable.

  10. An example of a product extensions would be a video game called NBA 2k. Each year when the game releases, its sales are usually outstanding because consumers anticipate it for a long time. However, when the NBA season is approaching the end, its sales decline significantly as people want to wait for its new version. At this time, the game often releases some new promotions and features to keep its consumers engage. For example, the company might lower its price, and add some new features that early buyers cannot access. This might be new player cards, faces, and skills that are attractive to consumers.

  12. I have seen Tide release Tide Pods, which are an extension of their detergent. It is supposed to be used in conjunction with it, to boost cleaning power and brighten the colours of the clothing. I have seen many advertisements for the product, and they are funny and eye catching. If I did my own laundry, I would definitely buy them. They are also fun to just throw in the wash to give it a little boost.

  13. An example of a product extension is how some video companies release downloadable content through micro transactions. A couple months after a video game is released and sales start slowing down a company may introduce downloadable content such as maps or boosts at a small price. I believe this model is a good because after a few months people might get bored of using the same map or skin and will be likely to purchase these extensions.

  14. Adidas is a company that I believe has taken full advantage of a product extension. the Collaborations with famous world renowned icons such as Kanye West, Pharrell, and more have caused Adidas to take back some of the attention that Nike had been gaining over the past 5 years. Nike was by far the most popular brand a few years ago but they have tough competition in Adidas who have become a very popular brand over the past year or so. The Ultraboost line and new styles of shoes have opened the door for them and they are now a hip and popular brand that is literally selling out of shoes in seconds due to the demand being so high. the best example is the yeezy line by kanye west, which is by far the most sought after shoe on the market at the moment, and has a resale value of over 5x its original price. it has rejuvenated a company that some may say was on the decline after losing the rights to be the official sponsor of the NBA, to being the most desired brand in 2016.

  15. An example of a product extension is the iPhone because they come out with new different sizes for them and colours. I believe this was successful because many people like the new colour and it created consumer interest because of this and I’m sure they sold more iPhones from this. Changing the sizes of the iPhone also was successful because people wanted bigger iPhones so they made them more expensive and they are selling a lot of them.

  17. An example of a successful product extension would be the CocaCola’s different flavours to keep the customers interested. CocaCola has come up with a multitude of flavours such as cherry and vanilla to rebrand the drink. It was successful because it drew a lot of attention to the CocaCola brand once again, whereas before the drink was being shadowed by other drinks.

  19. An example would be when products have limited edition items to bring back hype to the company name. Fanta usually brings new flavours that are sometimes special edition, because the original flavours are experiencing decline. I think it is a successful technique because if there is a limited supply, consumers are more likely to buy before it sells out.

  20. Campbell Soup is good example because the company was closely related to the core of the product, and they diversified their company by introducing the new flavour of soup, and it was extremely successful.

  22. I think an example of a product extension is what the shoe company TOMS did with their brand. For about a year and a half TOMS were a strong trend, they started creating and selling tons of different colours and patterns, and later on they came up with different types of shoes like heels, clogs, flip flops, etc. All these with their famous One for One campaign. Currently, this company’s products aren’t popular in the market, because of this, they recently decided to extend their demographic and launch products that didn’t have to do with shoes at all, i.e. sunglasses, backpacks, bags, and even coffee. All these novelties are part of the One for One campaign as well, the last one being one bag of coffee for one litter of water, this in my opinion can be labeled as a product extension that’s probably not going to be successful.

  23. Some product extensions that I see are in video games. After about two or three months into a video games life cycle, the will offer a 15$ downloadable content pack which includes more maps, skins, etc, for the game. I believe this does help the games success because it helps it stay current and more people will buy it overtime.
