Post 1I: Enter the Dragon’s Den

Our recent topic of discussion has been fads VS trends.  Dragon’s Den is a television program where budding entrepreneurs pitch their ideas to venture capitalists, hoping to score some of the Dragon’s money.  Many of these entrepreneurs are looking to take advantage of trends in the marketplace.  A similar program called Shark Tank also runs in the USA.  Research both of these programs and some of the pitches that have been made on the show.  Identify a pitch that was trying to take advantage of a trend.  What trend was it?  Was their pitch successful?  Did the entrepreneur manage to leverage the popularity of that trend to their advantage?  Explain why or why not.

  1. A trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. People go on the show to hopefully get money from the dragons and promote their product on the show. Products like the caffeine pill and others who dragons thought was a bad product or has problem with the way they manage the product get rejected.

  2. A trend is something that gains notoriety and excites people very quickly after it was discovered or made. A product on Dragon’s Den that tried to feed of a new trend was caffeine pills because it was very common for people to drink coffee and energy drinks, so they wanted to give people a third new option.

  3. In one episode of Dragon’s Den that we have watched during class, two entrepreneurs were trying to promote their “caffeine pill” to the dragons. Since coffee has recently become a huge trend due to Starbucks, many people are “addicted” to coffee and some of them even have to drink it every single day. However, coffee is not very convenient. Their idea is to have caffeine pill instead of coffee. Even though it is more convenient, but their products’ packaging is bad and they currently had no sales. On the other hand, they had the red bull’s logo on it which might seem confusing to customers. In the end, they did not succeed.

  4. A trend is a pattern of gradual change in a condition, output, or process, or an average or general tendency of a series of data points to move in a certain direction over time.A product introduced in Dragon’s Den is the caffeine pills. They were unsuccessful due to the unoriginal product and the lack of feasibility.

  5. One of the biggest products that have been on dragons den is “Holy Crap” cereal. This product was both vegan and gluten free, making it appealing to many people and catching the trend of healthy living. They were successful in getting a deal with the Dragons. This product has become very popular and is now sold in stores across Canada. They were able too make a very healthy product that appealed too many Canadians.

  6. Caffeine pills were introduced into the dragons den. They were extremely similar to red bull’s drink which is why they were rejected. The logo was nearly the same as red bull’s logo. The company had no originality, and were trying to bring back a long gone trend of pills. Consumers would not want to consume pills for a caffeine source as the ingredients aren’t clear, nowadays people want the most natural source of caffeine.

  7. A product that was trying to take advantage of the trends were the caffeine pills. The owner of the bussiness wanted to attract students and working people who wanted the benefits of caffience without drinking coffee. This product ultimately failed because there are already so many types of pills that already do this and the sales for the pitched product were negligible. The product also had very small warnings which could give room to lawsuits and the dragons did not see a risk in this product or want to risk getting sued.

  8. A product that was pitched to the dragons was caffeine pills. This product was trying to take over the trend of coffee. Their pitch was not successful because coffee is too popular to be overtaken and also there are already products like this on the market. They weren’t able to leverage the popularity of the trend to their advantage because the dragons were not convinced it would be any different from the other products on the market, plus it had a similar label to red bull.

  9. One of the most successful Dragon’s Den pitches was for a health-conscious cereal called “Holy Crap”. It was following the trend of healthy eating and lifestyle, and the daring name proved to be very wise marketing, as the product grew wildly successfully. And after just three minutes of their pitch, they had offers, making it one of the fastest offers in Dragon’s Den history.

  10. I saw a video of Lolo Lids, basically this was a lid of like a starbucks cup, but it would fit beer cans, so that even if you wanted to drink a beer in public you could kind of hide it so that you wouldn’t look like an alcholic, I think it was taking advantage of the trend of the coffe cups, a lot of people goes around with coffe cups… It was successful 150k for 33% of the company, and i think that the couple that was presenting that product was really good at showing it.

  11. A trend is almost like a fad but not, it is a general direction in which something is developing or changing over a period of time. The dragons were picked the idea of caffeine pills which were rejected by the dragons because it wasn’t something they though was popular and the branding was poor because it looked like red bull’s bull on it which really turned them off about the idea.

  12. Trend is a direction of something is developing, in the tv shows like Shark Tank or the Dragon’s Den is 4 entrepreneurs takes the idea of people brought their products. Of course the 4 entrepreneurs will discuss the products good or bad and make the final choice. If one of the entrepreneur likes the idea will ask for money to help them sell the product. Sometimes dragons are pissed because the really bad idea and they think it is waste of their time.

  14. A product introduced in one of Dragons’ Den episodes was caffeine pills, which was trying to take advantage of the fact that during the last years caffeine products have become a trend, making big businesses like Starbucks extremely popular. However, the pitch wasn’t successful, mainly because of the lack of originality and misleading information the package offered. Also, a big factor of their failure was the fact that no one ingests caffeine in a pill form anymore. Besides, this trend it’s not only popular for the fact that it gives you energy, but because of the way it can be enjoyed (flavourwise), which isn’t present in the pill.

  15. A pitch that I have seen on dragons den is the one called by crowdfanatic.com, who pitched the idea of a virtual dating website and valued it at 5 million dollars. The thing is, they hadn’t actually made a website, and had no sales or experience. They were simply asking for 5 million to make a website that was following the dating website trend. The dragons had a big issue with this and were not happy that they were basically being trolled by a team with no sales and no real life product, and felt disrespected and that that their time was being wasted. The dragons were “pissed” according to Bruce Croxon who was a dragon on that season and were mad that the pitch had no “viable revenue model”

  16. a trend is a general direction in which something is developing or changing. the people coming on the show can get an advantage on there product by having one of the tv members by have there name beside there product and ask for an amount of money they needs IF the tv show members like it. they did manage to leverage the popularity of there trends, because the show gets more popular leaving the people on the show becoming more popular making the products more well known.
