Post 2B: Christmas Characters

The Christmas holiday season is a huge opportunity for marketers and businesses make money.  Consumer spending tends to reach its peak during this time.  One of the ways marketers appeal to younger demographics is through special Christmas characters.  What are two of your all-time favourite Christmas characters?  What values did they represent?  Why were they appealing? Were there any companies that were able to connect their product to those characters?

  1. My two favourite Christmas characters were Will Ferrell as Buddy in Elf and Hermey the elf from Rudolph because both characters are outcasts despite being elves just like everyone else. Elf was able to sell several novelty items such as shirts with quotes or a Buddy figurine. These were popular because the character was very memorable and easy to like.

  2. my two favorite Christmas characters are frosty the snow man and Rudolph. these are both very well known characters and all children around the world love them. Rudolph is known for his red nose and is Santa’s helper to make sure he delivers all the presents on time. Frosty represents a friend that all these kids make when he comes to life. He shows us the importance of friends and how they have to let him go in the end.

  3. My all time favourite christmas characters are Rudolph and the grinch. Rudolph has a red nose, and the grinch hates christmas with a passion. They are appealing because they are both the outcasts of the movies and nobody likes them, but then they come back in the end of the movie and save christmas. Companies were able to sell stuffed animal and action figures out of these characters. One company that used Rudolph in their ad is Nissan.

  4. I like the Grinch because he learns a valuable lesson about christmas spirit and becomes a good character. I think the Grinch represents redemption because he tries to antagonize the village but in the end ot the movie his heart grows and he learns the meaning of christmas. My second favourite character is Santa Claus because when I was young I thought he brought me chirstmas present. It was very exciting to leave cookies out and find them gone in the morning. Some companies use santa claus to promote their brand and some malls bring mall santas to attract customers.

  5. My two favourite Christmas characters are the Grinch and Santa. The Grinch starts off cold and bitter but as time goes on he gets into the Christmas spirit and begins to see the joy of it. Santa really represents joy and happiness. Coke is really the one who keyed in on this idea of Santa and used in the bright red suit as a mascot for their brand during the Christmas season. Keying on this idea of Santa and gives children a connection when they see the product in stores.

  6. My two favourites were Elf (Will Ferrel) and Santa Clause 1,2,& 3 (Tim Allen). i enjoyed these because they are known movie stars so it makes it better to watch then just some random actor or cartoon. The grinch always sells their “grinch tree’ or people will market that.

  7. My favourite christmas characters are the Grinch who stole christmas and Rudolf the Red Nose reindeer. Rudolf has a bright red nose and the grinch is bright green, both being remarkable outcasts, yet come back to save christmas in the end. Rudolf represented the values of not being ashamed of your appearance, and that hard work will be rewarded. The grinch is a bad figure, ugly, scary and mean. This shows kids not to be like this, and is a perfect foil too santa.

  8. My favorite Christmas characters are the Christmas Shrek from Shrek the Halls and Santa Claus. I liked Shrek as a kid and found the movies pretty funny and the Shrek the Halls movie was a hit when it came out, he represents a Grinch-like person who sees how the Christmas spirit is special and has a change of heart. The second character I like is Santa Claus because his real name is St. Nicholas, and my name is Nicholas, so we both have the same name and that is a pretty cool connection to have with Santa. Santa has a jolly attitude and is kind and is a symbol of happiness and joy. Once I got an extra candy cane from a mall Santa because he thought it was cool that we had the same name. Coca Cola made a lot of money from the creation and evolution of their products amid the Christmas seasons featuring Santa.

  9. My two favourite childhood Christmas characters are of Santa Claus and Krampus. They are seen as the direct opposite of each other and both have a rich history. Santa Claus is the symbol of Christmas nowdays, which nearly all children believed that on the 24th of Christmas santa would come to their homes and give them gifts. Santa Claus is a legendary figure of Western Christian Culture who is said to bring gifts to well behaved children on Christmas eve. The first thing most people think about Christmas is Santa Claus. On the other hand, Krampus punishes “misbehaved” children during Christmas, in contrast with Santa Claus. Santa had been on coca-cola’s advertisement for almost 100 years now, and in many ways coca-cola helped shaped santa’s image and marketed to all parts of the world.

Santa Claus reinforced the value that if you behave well, you will be rewarded. Rudolf represented the values of not being ashamed of your appearance, and that hard work will be rewarded. Santa Claus is appealing to children because he is the symbol behind gifts. Rudolf is a main character in many Christmas Cartoons because of his uniqueness.

  14. Coca-Cola Helped Shape the Image of Santa. In 1931 the company began placing Coca-Cola ads in popular magazines. Archie Lee, the D’Arcy Advertising Agency executive working with The Coca-Cola Company, wanted the campaign to show a wholesome Santa who was both realistic and symbolic. So Coca-Cola commissioned Michigan-born illustrator Haddon Sundblom to develop advertising images using Santa Claus — showing Santa himself, not a man dressed as Santa.

Amu Nowruz (Persian: Amu Nowruz “Uncle Nowruz”), also known as Papa Nowruz is a fictional figure in Iranian folklore. According to the folklore, he appears annually at the beginning of spring, together with his companion Haji Firuz, to mark the beginning of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year.On the eve of spring equinox, when the Iranian New Year is celebrated in the Iranian cultural continent from Albania in the West to the west of China in the East, Amu Nowruz brings children gifts, much like his Christian counterpart Santa Claus. He is the husband of Nane Sarma, who shares a traditional love story with him in which they can meet each other only once a year.
Amu Nowruz is characterized as an elderly silver-haired man who puts on a felt hat, and has a walking stick, a long cloak of blue canvas, a sash, a pair of thin-soled giveh, and a pair of linen trousers. He is a wise historical presence who passes the old story of Nowruz to the youth. Haji Firuz plays a tambourine, dances, and demands gifts, while Amu Nowruz is the giver. These two characters haven’t been used by famous companies but they have been used for Iranian companies that only operate in Iran.

  15. My two favourite christmas characters were Snow Miser and Heat Miser from “The Christmas without Santa Claus”. These characters are appealing because they are brothers who are complete polar opposites, one being snow and ice and the other being heat and fire. These characters have not been connected with any companies but they definitely could be if any company chose to, like the elf on the shelf, because they appeal to kids as well as the older generation who watched the movie as kids.

  16. The most famous Christmas character of all time, and one of my personal favourites, is Santa Claus. He was originally created by Coca Cola as a symbol of the happiness and joy this Holiday represents, particularly for children. Santa became popular world wide and his popularity hasn’t decreased since. Currently and throughout the years, million of companies have used his image as a way to make their product more attractive for children, and some times even adults and seniors, i.e. Progressive, Nissan,ToysRus, ESPN,etc.. The fact that his image has been popular for a long time, means that a lot of people from different ages, cultures and nationalities can relate Santa to their childhood, usually as a happy memory. This makes it a currently used character for the marketing of different products of all categories.
Another of my personal favourites characters are the Tres Reyes Magos, which are basically part of a catholic tradition we celebrate in Mexico(I’m pretty sure you don’t have it here). According to the Bible, they were three men that gave presents to Jesus when he was just born, . We celebrate it on January 6th; by eating a sort of special cake and drinking hot chocolate, besides, children get candy from them. It is kind of like a Santa, but instead of presents they get candy. Throughout the years, several Mexican and Spanish bussinesses have taken advantage of their image by using it to market their products i.e. Sansa, Elektra, Bodega Aurerra, etc. In my opinion, the main demographic they’re trying to target are children, because they’re image is just particularly attractive for children because they still receive candy from them, but for the rest, it is only a day were you honour a catholic tradition with cake.

  18. Two of my all-time favourite Christmas characters are Frosty the Snowman and Santa Claus. They both represent similar, wholesome family values, including kindness and generosity. They represent the joy of children and the magic of childhood, with emphasis placed on having faith and believing. These characters are appealing because they look friendly and happy, and remind children every year of the excitement of Christmas. Campbell’s has a commercial with Frosty, showing how he melted after eating their warm soup, showing the comfort in winter time. As for Santa, he was in an M&M commercial that told of the M&Ms believing in Santa, and Santa believing in them. These commercials place emphasis on the nostalgia of a generation of people who love Christmas.

2: The grinch: he is a bad figure, ugly, scary and mean, so it basically teach them to not behave like him, Because they don’t like him. I don’t thin any company used him, because kids probably wouldn’t want anyhing.

  20. My 2 favourite christmas character’s would be the grinch and Rudolph the red nose reindeer. Rudolph’s value is to be santa’s right hand man, and he makes sure all the presents get to the kids house’s on time. The Grinch doesn’t really have values but his value was to steal christmas and make it go away. Rudolph was interesting because all the kids loved animals and he just really got everyone in the christmas spirit and the Grinch because its a classic and while kids would wait in line to take pictures with Santa they would play the movie. Yes companies were able to connect their product to those characters. Companies such as Chocolate companies,Toys R Us and Movies and Commercials.

Scrooge is the most relatable Christmas character to business because he was a successful business man himself. Grinch can be used in a car commercial because the catchy music. Scrooge can be used on a cereal box to remind us not to be the mean character.

  23. Santa was my favourite because he represented the spirit of christmas, he represented good behaviour and how it can be rewarded. Nearly all companies connect their product with sancta around christmas time. Krampus is the opposite of santa and intimidated children and is an incentive to not be naughty during the year. It’s a twisted way to encourage good behaviour. Not many companies connect Krampus into their product because it’s not the most popular christmas character.

  24. my 2 favourite christmas characters were the Will Pherrel in Elf and The Grinch, i valued them both because i usually liked watching there movies more than any of the other Christmas movies and some of the songs that played in the grinch were very catchy. the only company that could connect to these is the Elf movies made people buy more syrup to try on there spaghetti, weirdly enough.
