Post 2C: The “It” Toy

tickle

Each Christmas season it seems there is one toy or gift that every child wants.  Supplies run low, demand runs high and the resale & secondary markets for these products push speculators to buy and sell the products for big profit.  Tickle-Me Elmo was one such great example in the past of the “It” toy for the season.  What toy or product do you think is going to be the most popular this holiday season?  When shelves run dry, where would you look next to purchase one?  What is the mark-up on the product in the secondary or resale market?  Try to share a link to a news article or some other piece of evidence which demonstrates the product’s popularity this season.

  1. i feel that the video game consoles will be one of the most wanted gifts, even if the consoles are not extremely new. for every year it seems that electronics are the big gifts under the tree and are always looked for when empty on shelves at stores. the resale market is also a big go to around this time of year if you maybe cant afford to have a brand new one.

  2. I think the “it toy” this year is going to be some sort of iPod or electronic gaming machine, as they are constantly growing in popularity and countless kids ask there parents for consoles iPods iPads etc. Specifically, I believe the it toy of the year will definetly be a new apple product release such as a new iPod or iPhone. When the shelves run dry as it comes to apple products people will look to purchasing devices online instead of stores, for the two reasons that one the stores might sell out quickly on a popular product as well as a possibly cheaper offer online.

  3. I think Hatchimals will be one of the more popular products this Christmas because of their cutesy appearance and the gimmick of them hatching from eggs. with stores running out of them and any left for sale costing more than $200 the product has become a need for any child this year.

  4. This years “it” toy was something called hatchimals. Hatchimals are a small toy that comes in an egg once you purchase them and take them out of the packaging they will “hatch” out of their shells giving you a random animal. Though they have a high price tag at $90 they became extremely popular this year. Around the Christmas time this year the prices of these small toys increased almost 4 times the retail price making it impossible for some families to afford.

  5. The IT toy for this year was Hacthamals. Kids everywhere are going crazy for the cute monsters that come out of egg shaped containers. It has been reviewed on various toy review channels. The demand was so high that some people decided to stock up on these touys and sell them for ridiculously marked up prices.

  6. Kids in modern society usually don’t play much toys, because there is internet and games instead of all the toys. For example the PlayStation Company, Xbox and Nintendo. These company’s products are kids asking for year after year. So the company get good sales each year and it can be considered as a it “toy”.

  7. In my opinion, Lego’s toys were definitely dominating the market the past Christmas, and I consider it to be the it toy. Each year Lego come up with different themes and styles for their building blocks, and many of them can easily sell for more than 100 dollars. After the Lego Movie, which was said to be a total “advertisement”, had definitely gained Lego popularity and its sales had gone up significantly. If the shelf run dry then customers will go on Lego’s website to experience an entirely different shopping experience.

  8. Lego constantly makes creations that children ask for nearly every year. Each year they make astonishing sales, so I consider it an “It” toy. If shelves run dry, Lego has their own website where individuals can purchase the desired toy. There are many other toys like Lego but they’re not as well off as Lego

  10. In my economics class we learned about a toy called hatchimals. It is a stuffed animal which you buy in an egg and when you take it out of the package it eventually hatches into an action figure that can do many different things. The company which sold these toys did very well because they were the most sold toy on the market. These toys were sold out at pretty much every location you could by them at. People were buying the toys just so they could resell them for a substantial amount of money. So when people realized they couldn’t buy them in stores they turned to online sellers and were buying the toys for too much money. http://www.hatchimals.com/northpole.php?loc=ca

  11. In my microeconomics class, we learnt that this years it toy is the Hatchimals. Hatchimals a re like a new and improved furbie that are just as ugly if not uglier and are just as annoying. They are hugely popular this year and the company that makes them is sold out everywhere and have made an insane amount of money. the hatchimals are a stupid concept but hey have kids hooked and parents scrambling to get them for their kids, with the resale price being over 2x the retail price. This toy was recently in the news regarding controversy over it saying certain curse words, as the toy can be taught words but usually speak their own language of murmurs and squeaks. This angered some parents who were mad that it was a bad influence on their kids after paying more than retail for theses toys.

  12. A product or toy this season that could blow up could be another lego collaboration. Lego has always made innovative toys that children ask for year after year. Each year Lego toys always make great sales, so it can be considered a “It” toy.
